Cimizt

Cimizt is a combined oral contraceptive pill designed to protect women from getting pregnant. Each tablet contains two synthetic versions of female hormones, called progesterone and oestrogen. By altering a woman’s hormones in the way Cimizt and similar drugs do, pregnancy is prevented after sexual intercourse. Contraceptive pills like Cimizt are popular due to offering reversible protection which does not interrupt sex. While Cimizt can produce some side effects, the risks for people who do not have serious medical conditions are very low. If alternatives need to be sought, there are dozens of different variations of contraceptive pills that can be found online.

Description

What is Cimizt?

Cimizt is a combined oral birth control pill. Every tablet contains a small amount of two synthetic types of female hormones, known as progesterone and oestrogen. The use of these hormones prevent those that take these tablets from getting pregnant.

How does Cimizt work?

This combined contraceptive pill protects against pregnancy in three particular ways. The hormones contained in each tablet are able to stop the ovary from releasing an egg each month (during ovulation). They also thicken the fluid at the neck of the womb, which makes it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg. The hormones also alter the lining of the womb, which makes it less likely it will accept a fertilised egg.

What are the side effects of Cimizt?

Certain side effects are possible when taking combined hormonal contraceptive pills like Cimizt. The most commonly reported side effects associated with this drug are irregular bleeding and weight gain.

In rarer cases, reported side effects of Cimizt tablets have included the following:

  • Tender breasts
  • Breast enlargement
  • Breast pain
  • Reduction or absence of bleeding
  • Decreased sexual desire
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Nervousness
  • Dizziness
  • Migraine
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Acne
  • Rash
  • Fluid retention
  • High blood pressure

Birth control pills such as Cimizt also slightly increase the risk of having a blood clot in the veins and arteries. The risk of suffering blood clots can be greater if you are someone who has conditions which already increase the risk of having them. While the overall chance of birth control pills causing blood clots is very small, it is worth reading up on the ways to recognise a potential blood clot, especially if you know you have a condition which increases the risk of suffering one.

How long should I take Cimizt for?

Cimizt is designed so that you take one tablet every day during the first 21 days of the menstrual cycle. When you open a box of Cimizt, you’ll find 21 tablets are contained within a single strip and next to each tablet is printed the day of the week it should be taken.

You are ok to take the tablets either with or without food and with a small amount of water if deemed necessary. You should take the tablets around the same time every day.

When you are finished taking Cimizt tablets for 21 days, you should take no tablets for the following 7 days. During these 7 days without taking tablets (known as a stop or gap week), bleeding should begin. This is known as “withdrawal bleeding” and it usually starts on the second or third day of the gap week.

On the day that immediately follows the 7-day gap week, you should start the following strip, whether or not bleeding has stopped. Therefore, you should be starting a new strip on the same day of the week and the withdrawal bleed should occur on the same days each month. By using the Cimizt tablets this way, you should be protected against pregnancy on both the days you are and are not taking tablets.

Can men take Cimizt?

The Cimizt combined hormonal birth control pill is designed to be taken only be women. There are no benefits which men can gain from taking this particular medication.

Can I take Cimizt?

Women who are thinking of taking Cimizt tablets are advised to avoid taking them if they have any of the following conditions:

  • A blood clot in the blood vessel of your legs, your lungs or other organs
  • A disorder affecting your blood clotting
  • If you’ve ever had a heart attack or stroke
  • If you have or have ever had angina pectoris
  • Sever diabetes with blood vessel damage
  • Very high blood pressure
  • A very high level of fat in the blood
  • A blood-related condition known as hyperhomocysteinaemia
  • A type of migraine called ‘migraine with aura’
  • If you’ve ever had an inflammation of the pancreas
  • If you’ve ever had a liver disease which has permanently affected your liver
  • A tumour in the liver
  • Any unexplained bleeding from the vagina
  • Hepatitis C
  • An allergy to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • If you’ve ever had or suspected to have breast cancer of cancer of the genital organs

If you know you have any of these conditions listed, you must tell your doctor and they will discuss with you what other form of birth control would be more appropriate.

If, for whatever reason, you vomit within 3 to 4 hours of taking a tablet or you have severe diarrhoea, there is a chance that the active substances in the tablet are not fully absorbed into your body. This scenario is almost the same as forgetting to take a tablet. If this problem happens to you, then take another tablet from a reverse strip as soon as possible, preferably less than 12 hours after you were originally meant to take a tablet.

What if I take more Cimizt tablets than I should?

Taking too many Cimizt tablets than you should is not known to cause any serious harmful effects. However, if you do take more than one at once, you may experience symptoms of nausea or vomiting. If you do take too many Cimizt tablets, we recommend you get in touch with your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

What if I forget to take Cimizt tablets?

If you are less than 12 hours late taking a tablet, then the protection against pregnancy is not reduced. You should take the overdue tablet as soon as you remember and then take the following tablets at the time you’ve usually been taking them.

If, however, you are more than 12 hours late taking a tablet, then the protection against pregnancy could be reduced. The more tablets you have forgotten, the greater risk there is of becoming pregnant.

The risk of losing protection against pregnancy is at its greatest if you forget a tablet at the start or end of a strip. If you do ever forget to take one or several Cimizt tablets and you’re unsure about the best course of action, you could check what the information leaflet says or contact your doctor for advice.
